“Story is a yearning meeting an obstacle.”
Robert Olen Butler
THE SOOTHING MONOTONY OF THE KNOWN
The lid is off, a funny river springs from nowhere and floods a bowl filled with pre-formatted ideas. Soaked in something unexpected, images, words, formulas, emojis, signs and grammatical symbols, contort and shake in utter rage.
“Put it back,” they scream, “put the lid back.”
A bony-dome projects a shadow engulfing them. They breathe in relief and return to their usual ways, never straying off path.
In a corner of the bowl, something looks through a crack. It probes it tentatively.
The others squeeze a sideway glance. Fear and hope pulse in the silence.
It wiggles through and it’s gone!
